Apple G4
Apple’s PowerBook G4 series laptops are notebook computers that are powered by the PowerPC G4 processor, which is made by Motorola. PowerBook G4s have long been known for their styling and unique design, with the case being made out of unusual materials for a laptop. In 2001, Apple introduced the Titanium PowerBook, and later in 2003, an Aluminum model was released, with the Titanium model discontinued shortly thereafter. The Aluminum PowerBook G4’s PowerPC processor runs between 866 and 1670 megahertz, depending on which option is selected upon buying the machine, and this is a very respectable speed for a mobile processor. |

Screen size varies, as 12, 15, and 17 inch models are available, each containing an LCD screen with an aluminum enclosure. The 17 inch model, which is a rarity among laptops, has a screen resolution of 1680 x 1050. This is the same as Apple’s 20 inch iMac and Apple Cinema Display. The 15 inch model has a 1440 x 960 pixel resolution, which is still very high for a screen of that size on a laptop.
When the Titanium PowerBook G4 was introduced, it was capable of booting up in the Mac OS 9 or Mac OS X operating systems; however the Aluminum version that replaced this model will only start in Mac OS X. There is a way to run Mac OS 9 from the Aluminum G4, and that is to run it in classic mode from within OS X. Although the PowerBook was a popular model, it stopped being made by Apple in 2006, and was replaced by the MacBook and MacBook Pro, which uses Intel components rather than those made by Motorola. Used or refurbished PowerBook G4’s can still be found online at computer retailer sites, such as Apple’s own website, and also at auction and classifieds sites. Overall, the PowerBook was a great laptop during its time. The processing speed was comparable to Windows based laptops during that time period, although there were no dual core capabilities in the Power PC G4 processor like the Intel chips that are now used in the MacBooks. Memory was adequate as well, along with extras such as the AirPort Extreme wireless connectivity, the Bluetooth EDR capability, and the DVI output. And the industrial type styling is superb, with the titanium and aluminum case and backlit keyboard. If you are a Mac devotee, you would love the PowerBook G4. |
