Gaming Laptop.
Traditionally, the only computer users that bought laptops were corporate types who needed access to their data even while they were on the road, or salespeople who used them to give detailed presentations. Laptops just didn’t have the power that desktop computers had, and power intensive applications were best run on desktop computers. Hard core gamers, in particular, were stuck sitting at their desks so that they could get the computing power required to process advanced, 3D graphics. But with recent advances in computer technology, such as the ability to make a high performance processor run without as much heat, manufacturers have been able to make laptops as powerful as desktops. And as a result, a whole new category of portable computers has emerged, which is the gaming laptop. |

The best laptops built for gaming are high performance machines with a lot of processing power on both the motherboard and in the graphics hardware. At a minimum, a dual core processor is needed to handle the latest multithreaded games. In the past, single core processors could only process one instruction at a time, so in a game where there are tens or hundreds of different things going on at once, some of the had to wait, or the processor had to switch back and forth very quickly between all of the processes. This happens faster than the blink of an eye, but it is still a drain on resources. A dual core processor has two completely separate mechanisms for processing instructions, so the throughput is twice as fast. And watch for new quad core processors coming later this year. The Intel Core 2 Duo and the AMD Turion 64 X2 are two examples of dual core processors that can handle advanced gaming.
More important than a good processor is a lot of memory. Top rated gaming laptops will have at least one gigabyte of RAM, and preferably two or four. When a program executes, the computer loads as much of it as it can into memory, because the processor can access memory a lot quicker than it can access the hard drive. The more of the game that can fit into memory at once, the faster the game will be. The most important aspect of a gaming notebook is the graphics hardware. The best laptops for gaming will include graphics adapters made by NVIDIA and ATI, and you should look for those that contain at least 128 megabytes of memory, and preferably 512. This works on the same principle as RAM, in that the graphics have to be loaded into memory first before they can be displayed, so a lot of memory is needed to hold intricate 3D graphics. Gaming laptops are not cheap, so the best bet if you are strapped for cash is to buy a hybrid gaming and internet laptop, which may not be as powerful, but can still run most games in a satisfactory manner. |
