VTech
If you’re looking for an inexpensive way to introduce your small child to the world of computers, look no further than the VTech Nitro Notebook. This learning machine is designed just like an actual laptop computer, with a keyboard, mouse, and LCD screen, so that your child can get the feeling of using a “big person’s” computer, without the big person’s price tag. Each Nitro comes with many different parts, including an actual keyboard for data entry into the programs. A real mouse and mouse pad is included as well, along with built in speakers to handle the sound from each program. In addition, a cursor pad and enter button is located in front of the keyboard for instances when there is not enough room to use the mouse. Other controls normally found on a laptop are there as well, including status lights, a volume switch, and a contrast switch for the screen. |

Games and learning activities for the Nitro come on cartridges rather than discs, so that they are more durable and will last longer in the hands of a small child. DVDs tend to get scratched even when adults are dealing with them, so one can imagine how long a DVD would last when a four year old is loading it into and out of a drive. Two bonus cartridges, “Story Time” and “Sing-Along”, come with the purchase of a Nitro.
Unlike an actual laptop computer, the VTech Nitro Notebook runs on 3 AA batteries, with the manufacturer not recommending rechargeable batteries. In addition, a backup battery is installed in the unit to save the data that’s in memory. VTech recommends replacing this battery once a year to avoid damage to the unit. Or, to run on electricity, a DC Adaptor is available as well. But the best part of this learning laptop made by VTech is the price. For less than fifty dollars, your child can not only play games, but he or she can learn phonics, comprehension, math, and other fun activities while feeling like a grown up with his or her very own laptop computer. |
